Orphan Photo #42

This gentleman probably looks familiar.  I blogged about him a few weeks ago in Orphan Photo #38.

It appears to be another photo of Carlton E. Taylor.

Orphan 0042-B

The back reads nearly identical to the other photo, except that this time, there is the suffix “LL. D.” added to his name.  It appears Carlton was “doctor of law.”

Orphan Photo #41

Orphan 0041

What’s unfortunate with the photograph is that there is no identifying information.  But what’s neat about it is the fact that there is a photograph of a woman in the background. Could it be his wife”  Perhaps a daughter?

The imprint reads: " “W.P. Hockart, Richland, Iowa.”

Orphan Photo #40

Orphan 0040

Aren’t these little boys adorable?  Unfortunately there is no identifying information for them.  The imprint reads” F. B. Strathmann, Mascoutah, Ill.”

As luck would have it, I did find an F B Strathman (wife Ida) in Mascoutah, St. Clair, Illinois in the 1900 census listed as a photographer born in August 1867.  A look back at the 1880 census indicates he may be Frank Strathmann, son of Eliz.  I find Frank B Strathmann and his wife Ida in Seneca, Nemaha, Kansas in 1910, still a photographer.  He and Ida remained in Seneca, Kansas until at least 1930.  Given that information, and his age, it is likely this photograph was taken between 1885 and 1910.

Break Out the Bubbly, WWTTS Turns One Today!

I started this blog one year ago today.  Even though the blog had some down time during September through November, I still managed to post roughly 50 photographs.  I was fortunate to have reunited one photo with family, and have others in the works.  Here’s to another year.  Cheers!

Orphan 0038

Who is this lovely man?  The back reads:

Yours Truly
Carlton E Taylor

Orphan 0038-B

Is this a photo of Carlton?  Perhaps.

This photograph is cut to an oval and mounted on a 1/16” thick board measuring 6-3/4” x 9-3/4”.  The imprint reads, “ C. E. Smith Rock Island, Ill.”

There is a Carleton G Taylor living in Rock Island in the 1900 census.  According to the census, the parents are Eleazer G T and Victoria A C Taylor, and Carleton was born in September 1874.  If this is Carlton, it’s likely that this photo was taken several years later, as he would have been about 26 in 1900, and this gentleman is certainly not 26 in this photo.

Care to weigh in?  Is he your ancestor?

Orphan Photo #35

This one is definitely a find for a genealogist.  It practically gives you the family on the back of the card!

Bub. Jones Son of
Jim and Criss M[?]ierly Jones,
Grandson of
Abel and Martha Underwood Jones,
Brothers and sisters of Bub. Jones
Cap. Jones Glisan [?]
Mattie Jones Sillers
Carrie Jones Riney-Miller
Lille Jones
Albert Jones
Melvin Jones

The photographer’s imprint reads:

Gilhousen
Kahoka Mo.

Well, wouldn’t ya know, there is no “Bub” Jones in the censuses (okay, there are two but neither are relevant).  So I searched for Melvin, since it’s the least common name among the list of Jones’.  I find the family living in Lewis County, Missouri in 1870 and 1880.  Kahoka is located in Clark County, Missouri, which is right above Lewis County.  Having not done extensive research in the area, I suppose Kahoka could have one time been located in Lewis County.  Regardless, the relative location seems to be a good fit for this photograph and this family.

From what I gather, this young gentleman is James Jones, who apparently went by the nickname Bub.  I assume this because James is the only one not accounted for on the list on the back of the photo, but shows up in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.

James was born about 1860, so based on this and guessing that he was about 20 or so when the photo was taken, I estimate it was taken about 1880.

There are a LOT of James Jones’ that I can’t even begin to piece this one together to even begin to figure out if there are any living relatives that may want this photograph.  So, if you think it’s yours, please contact me.  If anyone wants to take a stab at piecing the family together, post a comment on this post.

Orphan Photo #34

Orphan 044

This beautiful cabinet card, appears to be a wedding photo and is in near-perfect condition.  Unfortunately, there is no identifying information.  The photographer’s imprint reads:

John Hills

Art Studio

Cleveland, Wis.

Oddly enough, there are five towns of Cleveland in Wisconsin.  To narrow down the approximate location, I did a census search for John Hills.  I find a John Hills living in Centerville, Manitowoc, Wisconsin in the 1900 census.  He was born in 1870 and is listed as a photographer.  I continue to find him through 1930, but never again listed as a photographer.  Based on this information, I estimate that the photo was taken between 1888-1909, starting with when he would have been about 18-years old and up to the year I find him as a postmaster in the 1910 census.  It is of course possible that his main occupation in 1910 was postmaster and that he did photography on the side.  I’m having a hard time narrowing the time frame down based on the apparel the couple is wearing, so that’s my best guess.
